The Fibre Guide

Colombo works with seven noble fibres, from cashmere to vicuña, and names each piece for the one it is woven from. These are the five you will find at Via Cavour: what each name means, how the cloth feels, and how it wears.

01 · The undercoat of the cashmere goat

Cashmere

Cashmere is the fine undercoat of the cashmere goat, combed by hand each spring as the animal sheds its winter coat. Colombo spins and weaves it in Borgosesia, in northern Italy, into cloth that is light for its warmth and soft from the first wear.

02 · A young goat’s first combing

Kid Cashmere

Kid cashmere comes from a young goat’s first combing, when the fibre is at its finest. The yarn is softer and more delicate than standard cashmere, which is why Colombo keeps it for knitwear and tailoring worn close to the skin.

03 · The wild Siberian goat

Yangir

Yangir is the wild Siberian goat, a mountain animal of Central Asia. Its fibre is gathered in very small quantities, which makes yangir one of the rarest cloths Colombo weaves. It is exceptionally light for its warmth, with a soft, dense hand.

04 · The finest merino, 12.8 microns

05 · Cashmere blended with silk

Cashmere and Silk

Silk is blended with cashmere for a drier hand and a quiet sheen. The cloth is lighter and falls more fluidly, a natural choice for a car coat or trousers that travel well.

Care

Caring for Noble Fibres

Rest Between Wears

Give each piece a day off so the fibre can recover its shape.

Brush, Do Not Wash

A soft clothes brush lifts dust and keeps the surface even. Dry clean only when it is needed.

Hang and Fold

Hang coats and jackets on shaped hangers. Fold knitwear so it keeps its length.

Store with Care

Keep pieces in breathable garment bags with cedar, away from direct light.
